It's a fair question, and it comes up a lot: an AirTag is cheap, it takes ten seconds to drop in a glovebox, and it shows up on a map. Why pay for a dedicated GPS tracker?
The honest answer is that they're solving different problems. An AirTag is very good at the problem it was designed for: finding things you've misplaced. Vehicle theft recovery is a different problem, and the design choices that make an AirTag great at the first one work against it in the second.
They don't find their own location the same way
This is the core of it, and everything else follows from it.
An AirTag doesn't have GPS and doesn't have a cellular connection. It broadcasts over Bluetooth, and its location is whatever nearby Apple devices happen to report back on its behalf. In a busy city street, that's often good enough. On a rural road at 2am, with no iPhones passing by, it's nothing at all, the tag simply isn't being seen by anything.
A dedicated GPS tracker works the other way around: it determines its own position from GPS satellites and reports it over the LTE cellular network, the same network your phone uses. It doesn't depend on a stranger's phone being nearby to know where it is.
Live tracking versus occasional pings
Because of that difference, what you actually see on the map is different.
A Spectre tracker reports its position every few seconds while a vehicle is moving, along with live speed and direction of travel. That's the information Police can actually use to intercept a vehicle in transit.
Crowd-sourced location gives you a pin that updates whenever it happens to update, which might be minutes apart, or might be not at all for a long stretch. "It was near here, a while ago" is very different from "it's on this road right now, heading north at 90km/h."
The anti-stalking feature works against you here
This one is counter-intuitive and it's worth understanding.
AirTags are deliberately designed to alert people when an unknown tag is travelling with them, a genuinely good safety feature that exists to prevent stalking. But it means a thief driving a stolen vehicle may well get a notification on their own phone telling them there's an unknown tracker in the car with them.
At that point it gets found and thrown out a window, and you've lost the vehicle and the tag.
A hardwired GPS tracker doesn't announce itself. There's no visible antenna and no indicator light, and it communicates over standard LTE, the same as any mobile phone, so it isn't picked up by the RF detectors sometimes used to sweep for bugs. Finding one means physically knowing where to look.
Only one of them can stop the vehicle
Worth stating plainly, because no amount of location data does this: a tracker wired into the ignition circuit can be remotely immobilised from your phone, so the vehicle won't restart once it's switched off. For safety it never cuts a running engine mid-drive, it takes effect the next time the ignition is cycled.
An AirTag tells you where something is. That's all it was ever meant to do.
What happens outside cellular coverage
Rural New Zealand deserves a specific mention, because this is where the gap gets widest.
Where there's no LTE signal, a Spectre tracker keeps recording GPS positions locally and uploads them automatically once signal returns, so you get a complete trip history rather than a hole in the map. An AirTag with no Apple devices nearby has recorded nothing at all, because it never knew where it was in the first place.
Where an AirTag genuinely makes sense
None of this makes AirTags bad. They're excellent for luggage, keys, bags, and anything you're likely to misplace rather than have deliberately taken. They're cheap, the battery lasts about a year, and there's nothing to install.
If what you want is "where did I leave that," an AirTag is the right tool. If what you want is "someone has taken my vehicle and I need it back," it isn't.
