Most GPS tracking gets talked about in terms of cars, utes and vans. But a big share of what actually gets stolen in New Zealand isn't a car at all, it's a boat on a trailer, a bike out of a shed, a quad off a farm, or an excavator off a site over a long weekend.
The good news is the requirement is simple: if it has a 12V or 24V power source, it can be hardwired and tracked. That covers motorbikes, jet skis, boats, caravans, trailers, tractors, and heavy plant.
Why these assets are a softer target
Vehicles get driven, parked in the open, and noticed when they're missing. The assets on that list mostly don't.
A boat sits on a trailer at the side of a house for months between trips. A quad lives in a shed at the back of a paddock. A digger sits on site overnight and over the weekend. Nobody's checking on any of them daily, and that's the whole problem, most of these things go missing in a window where nobody would notice for hours or days.
That's exactly the gap a geofence alert closes. You draw a zone around the yard, the shed, the paddock, or the site, and you get a push notification the moment something leaves it. Not a report the next morning, a notification while it's happening.
Rural coverage: the bit worth understanding before you buy
This is the question we get most from farm and marine customers, and it deserves a straight answer.
Spectre trackers report over the LTE cellular network, so wherever there's LTE coverage, tracking works live. Rural New Zealand being what it is, that's not everywhere.
What matters is what happens in the gaps. When there's no signal, the tracker keeps recording its GPS positions locally and uploads them automatically once signal is restored. So a machine that spends its day in a dead spot doesn't produce a hole in your trip history, you get the full route once it comes back into coverage.
For theft specifically, that means a vehicle taken through a no-coverage area isn't invisible; the record catches up as soon as it hits signal again.
Things that sit idle need different alerts
An asset that gets used every day and one that sits for three months have genuinely different failure modes.
For anything seasonal or occasional, boat over winter, a machine between jobs, the risk isn't just theft, it's the battery going flat without anyone noticing. Battery-low and battery-disconnected alerts are included free, so you find out when voltage drops below safe levels rather than when it won't turn over on the first good weekend of the season.
The tracker itself draws around 15–20mA in standby, which is less than a typical car alarm, so it isn't the thing flattening your battery.
Where to fit it
The same principle as any vehicle: hidden from plain sight, with a reasonable view of the sky for GPS signal. On machinery and boats there's usually more scope to hide a unit properly than in a car, which works in your favour.
Non-standard setups, heavy plant, 24V systems, or anything where a permanent 12V/24V supply isn't straightforward, are worth a conversation before you buy rather than after.
